THEYAWNCHOKER X BARBA DEE CAPSULE COLLECTION

Posted by on

As part of our Fall’18 collection, we are proud to announce our collaboration with Athens based graffiti artist, Barba Dee.

The goal of the ‘Holy Smokes’ artwork is not only to attack the government’s prioritisation of corporations and religious organisations over street artists, who rarely do any commissioned work, but also the controversy between street art itself, in terms of what is acceptable and what is not.

While there are no boundaries, penalties or any kind of rejection to how these organisations express themselves and interact with society, graffiti still remains considered as an illegal activity, while it is used to counter the dominant society and challenge the common belief.

~ Holy Smokes ~

I am unacceptable.
You park illegally. You ignore the homeless. You drink coffee instead. You drop cigarette butts. You go to church.
You interact with society. I am unacceptable.

I am unacceptable.
You paste posters over town. You tell me I'm not good enough. You tell I'm not pretty. You tell me I need the things you have. You tell me to worship you.
You interact with society. I am unacceptable.

I am unacceptable.
You call it marketing. You call it “good-business”. You call it a committee. You say God is on your side. You don't bat an eye. You start again. You start again.
You interact with society. I am unacceptable.

I am unacceptable.
You call me a tagger. You call it graffiti. You call it street art. You call it public art. You call it public space. You call it political. You call it illegal. You buy it. You burn it.
You interact with society. I am unacceptable.

If I transform an abandoned building. I am acceptable.
If I paint a mural commercially. I am acceptable.
If I am commissioned for the new tourist center. I am acceptable.
If I am cheap. I am acceptable.
If I am collected in a gallery. I am acceptable.
If I am expensive. I am acceptable.

I identify hypocrisy.
I do it for free.
I interact with society.
I am unacceptable.
